ESPN’s Fran Frashilla Breakout Nominees

Memphis Tigers
It took time for this freshman-oriented team to understand the importance of RPI ratings and preparing for everyone on their schedule. The Tigers were the third-youngest team in college basketball last season, and despite some logical growing pains, won 25 games before losing to Arizona in the NCAA tournament.

While the focus will be on Josh Pastner’s outstanding sophomore class, led by Joe Jackson, Will Barton and Tarik Black, the difference between another good season and a long tournament run could be the return to form of multi-talented 6-8 senior Wesley Witherspoon. After suffering a knee injury midway though last season and a two-game suspension, as well, Witherspoon seems excited about his final year, according to Pastner.

Adding 6-5 high school All-American and local product Adonis Thomas will add a jolt of defensive energy initially. He’s a real warrior.

Fran Frashilla of ESPN Mentions Spoon

On ESPN.com Fran Frashilla writes about the Nations most versatile players, this is what he mentions about Spoon:

Wesley Witherspoon, 6-9, Jr., Memphis
Witherspoon is one of the few players in the country who can successfully navigate all five positions if need be. While John Calipari experimented with him at the point guard position as a freshman, his true strengths come from being as versatile as a Swiss Army knife. Last season, Witherspoon averaged almost 13 points and five rebounds and shot 43 percent from behind the arc. His ballhandling lets him get anywhere on the court and his length and size can be equally effective on the defensive end. While everyone talks of the Tigers’ terrific recruiting class, a big part of their success will be due to the continued improvement of Witherspoon.
