Four Tigers Make Top 60 List

Top 100 Players in College Basketball

32. Will Barton (sophomore forward, Memphis). Barton is out of control often, but his talent is undeniable. — G.P.

37. Adonis Thomas (freshman forward, Memphis). Haven’t seen a lot of Thomas, but I’m fairly certain Parrish ranked him something like eighth overall when we started this process. Could be the piece that gets Memphis back into national conversation. — M.N.

41. Tarik Black (sophomore forward, Memphis). Black has more heralded teammates, but he’s probably Josh Pastner’s most important piece. — G.P.

60. Joe Jackson (sophomore guard, Memphis). After struggling to start last season, Jackson proved he can be one of the best PGs in America. — J.B.

Great Season on the Court — BEST Season Ever off the Court!

The Tigers hoops team compiled a grade-point average of 2.8 for the 2011 spring semester, which is a school record for the program. Drew Barham and Preston Laird both recorded perfect 4.0 grade-point averages in the spring semester, while Joe Jackson earned Dean’s List recognition. Tarik Black and Charles Holt joined Barham, Jackson and Laird in the Tiger 3.0 Club for the spring semester.

ESPN’s Fran Frashilla Breakout Nominees

Memphis Tigers
It took time for this freshman-oriented team to understand the importance of RPI ratings and preparing for everyone on their schedule. The Tigers were the third-youngest team in college basketball last season, and despite some logical growing pains, won 25 games before losing to Arizona in the NCAA tournament.

While the focus will be on Josh Pastner’s outstanding sophomore class, led by Joe Jackson, Will Barton and Tarik Black, the difference between another good season and a long tournament run could be the return to form of multi-talented 6-8 senior Wesley Witherspoon. After suffering a knee injury midway though last season and a two-game suspension, as well, Witherspoon seems excited about his final year, according to Pastner.

Adding 6-5 high school All-American and local product Adonis Thomas will add a jolt of defensive energy initially. He’s a real warrior.
