Memphis Tigers
It took time for this freshman-oriented team to understand the importance of RPI ratings and preparing for everyone on their schedule. The Tigers were the third-youngest team in college basketball last season, and despite some logical growing pains, won 25 games before losing to Arizona in the NCAA tournament.
While the focus will be on Josh Pastner’s outstanding sophomore class, led by Joe Jackson, Will Barton and Tarik Black, the difference between another good season and a long tournament run could be the return to form of multi-talented 6-8 senior Wesley Witherspoon. After suffering a knee injury midway though last season and a two-game suspension, as well, Witherspoon seems excited about his final year, according to Pastner.
Adding 6-5 high school All-American and local product Adonis Thomas will add a jolt of defensive energy initially. He’s a real warrior.

Jeff Goodman senior college basketball writer for FOXSports.com had this to say about the recent hiring of Frank Matrisciano:
“We talk about all the head coaching movement in the offseason, but one of the most significant offseason hirings is that of renowned trainer Frank Matrisciano coming on board to Memphis. This is a huge coup for Josh Pastner and the Tigers program. This is a guy that is considered arguably the elite guy in his field, and this should pay dividends soon. I’ve heard guys like Blake Griffin, Gilbert Arenas and even Danny Ainge, who had former Celtic Gabe Pruitt, work out with Matrisciano. Terrific outside-the-box hire by Memphis”

Memphis: For once, the Tigers didn’t have to deal with any players defecting to the NBA. The recruiting class stayed intact. And then Josh Pastner pulled off something NBA teams couldn’t by landing noted strength and conditioning coach Frank Matrisciano, who is now having his famous San Francisco sand hill reconstructed behind the Finch Center practice facility. The Tigers will be the best-conditioned athletes in the country.
