The last time William Bedford was at the University of Memphis for basketball practice there was no Finch Center, as a matter of fact, there was no University of Memphis, it was Memphis State University.  However on Monday afternoon Bedford returned to watch the 2012-2013 Memphis Tigers practice.

Taking a break from his management duties with the new ABA team, the Delta Storm, Bedford came to see how the team was progressing.

“I have not gotten to watch enough to tell how they are yet, but I can tell you that free throws and defense are what will help this team win a championship,” Bedford said.

Bedford said he hopes that this Memphis team is like his teams used to be, meaning that they hung out all the time and everyone’s parents knew each other and he believes that is one thing that helps build a strong team.

When asked who in particular he came to see play today, Bedford got a smile on his face really quickly.

“That my man right there,” Bedford said as he pointed to Adonis Thomas.  “He is one of those Melrose guys, he has that fight in him, that want-to-win attitude, what I mean is he is going to do whatever it takes to win. It may be rebounding or defense or keeping the best player on another team in check.”

Speaking of tough players when asked who the toughest player he faced in college was, Bedford said his toughest opponent was Hakeem Olajuwon.

“He was tough on defense and he was tough on offense, I played against him in the regional of the NCAA tournament, Bedford said.

Bedford also attended Melrose High School graduating in 1983.  Bedford is also working on completing his degree in Criminal Justice with online classes at the University of Memphis.

When asked if he had anything to say to Tiger Nation Bedford responded with “ I am here to stay, here to watch this team play, which means I will be at the games this year and I am here to raise my kids and no one is going to make me take a step backwards.

So look for one more Tiger legend to be at the Finch Center and at the home games, because he is back and he is here to stay.
